Bathroom Theater

My Chinatown Object Theater

Stories of family and community traditions in Chicago's Chinatown are told in this richly-layered
object theater. Oral histories, traditional music performance, image projections, dramatic lighting
effects, objects, and constructed tableaus create a rich portrait of this community. Themes such
as Dim Sum, immigration and identity, Chinese New Year, and traditional Chinese medicine are
explored.

Bathroom Theater

A mirror and a bathtub come alive to have a spirited discussion about safety in the bathroom. This bilingual video installation utilizes animation and video, dramatic lighting, and a comedic soundtrack in a re-created bathroom environment to teach safe habits to young children and caregivers.

Now You're Cooking!

Now You're Cooking!

An oven mitt game show host invites contestants to "step right up" to his stove-top stage to play "Now You're Cooking!" An animatronic puppet, dramatic lighting, and a comedic, bilingual soundtrack combine in a game show format to teach young children and caregivers about stove-top safety.

Green River Theater

Green River Theater

A fireside dialogue between a paleontologist and his daughter at their Wyoming campsite takes viewers back in time to reveal a world in which three major fossils lived and thrived. Dramatic sound and lighting effects, mechanized props, painted murals, and artfully processed video projection combine to transform a dusty desert plain into a lush, tropical environment, setting the displayed fossils - a crocodile, a fan palm, and a fish – into their geological context.

Nkondi Theater

A 200 year-old Nkisi Nkondi figure forms the centerpiece of this award-winning object theater, which utilizes archival and contemporary footage synched on three monitors, and dramatic sound and lighting effects to recreate the setting in which the figure was used. Nkondi Theater illustrates how ceremony, litigant participation, and spiritual mediation served to settle disputes among the Bakongo people of Central Africa.

Marcus Garvey, The Movement and the Philosophy

An interactive profile of the life and work of Marcus Garvey features over thirty interviews with Garveyites, scholars, and family members, 250 pages of interactive text, dozens of archival photos, and over 65 audio re-creations of Garvey's writings and speeches. An invaluable resource for community members, students, and scholars, the DVD is designed for use in touchscreen kiosks in Liberty Hall.

Dinosaur Expedition

This award-winning bilingual video interactive takes viewers on an expedition to the Sahara Desert in which Paleontologist Paul Sereno and his team discovered and unearthed Suchomimus — a "remarkable new species of fish-eating dinosaur." In a rich, multi-faceted portrait of the expedition, viewers learn about paleontology and the process of discovery by meeting five expedition members, each of whom tells about a different aspect of the journey.

Contemporary social dangers facing young people are addressed in this interactive DVD program, in which re-created scenarios are interspersed with hosted segments. And visitors are asked to choose between opposing potential outcomes. Topics include guns, inhalants, and stranger danger.

This “suite” of five video installations explores various aspects of one family’s contemporary Senegalese life. Sounds and textures of daily and sacred events are illustrated in such segments as having afternoon tea, preparing a meal, preparing for a religious holiday, visiting a traditional storyteller and musician, and taking a bus ride through Dakar.
